Fall 2012 Medusa Seminar
This is a call for papers for the Fall 2012 Medusa Seminar, which will take place on Friday, November 2nd from 9:30 to 12:30 am in the 2nd floor conference room. Mark your calendars!!
In case you've never been to a Medusa event, it is a seminar series put on by UofT Anthropology grad students, for each other. It is meant to provide the opportunity for us to present our work to our peers, and is an excellent opportunity both to solicit their feedback and to practice formal presentation skills. As you all know, there are a number of important anthropology conferences coming up, so the November Medusa seminar is especially intended to provide an opportunity for presenters to practice their presentations. That being said, you are welcome to submit an abstract and to present your work even if you are not planning to present at one of of the upcoming conferences.
There a few changes to the format of Meduse this year. The November event will feature panel presentations on specific themes as opposed to sub-disciplines. So, there is the potential to have papers from different disciplines on the same panel, and you can choose to attend the panels which are of interest to you.
Please submit your abstracts electronically to Kate Rice (kathleen.rice@mail.utoronto.ca) by Wednesday October 17th. Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words. Finally, we need moderators too, so if you are interested in facilitating a panel, please let either Kate or Mathew Gagne know.
Also, the format for the Spring 2013 Medusa seminar will be substantially different from previous years. It will take place on Thursday the 21st of March and will be an all-day colloquium. Details to follow.
Send your papers! We know who you are and where to find you, and will totally guilt-trip you and call on favours if you don't step up to the plate (this last sentence delivered with either a saucy wink or tearful puppy-dog eyes, depending on which you're more susceptible to).
Your devoted Medusa Coordinators,
-Kate Rice & Mathew Gagne
vis-à-vis: Explorations in Anthropology
We're pleased to announce that, for the first time, vis-à-vis will release individual articles ahead of volume publication. Please enjoy this sneak peek at our in-production volume, Traces, a multi-perspective collection that highlights the traces of human habitation, political history, personal histories and cultural mythologies that anthropologists study. Click this address to read the newest articles: http://vav.library.utoronto.ca/index.php/vav/index
In the meantime, remember that vis-à-vis depends on the volunteer efforts of all of us. You can help our journal move forward by registering as a reviewer, or even by submitting your own manuscript. We accept submissions on a continuous basis, so authors and reviewers alike are always welcome. Simply go to the website and open up a user account to get started.
Regards,
vis-à-vis Editorial Team 2012-13

Representatives for Anthropology Hiring Committees
We are looking for students who are interested in participating as the grad representatives on the search committees for faculty positions at UTSC (sociocultural and bioarchaeology), STG (medical anthropology), and UTM (linguistic anthropology). As a rep you will take part in the decision making process, which includes tasks like attending meetings and viewing job talks. The majority of the committee work will be done in the fall semester, though responsibilities may run into January. The grad members will not be voting, but this is a great opportunity to gain experience in the hiring process and meet the potential additions to the U of T anthropology community.
Each committee requires one rep that is familiar with the field of the candidates and with the Department of Anthropology in general. For more information on what the committees are looking for, please visit the Employment Opportunities page for the job postings: http://anthropology.utoronto.ca/home/employment-opportunities/
For those interested in the sociocultural committee at UTSC, please respond ASAP to the AGSU co-presidents (Emma Yasui and Steven Dorland). For the remaining 3 positions or inquiries, please contact us by Wednesday, October 10th.
